Đurić Confers with Head of UNMIK

Minister Đurić emphasised that Serbia attaches great importance to the continuation of regular Security Council meetings on Kosovo and Metohija, in accordance with Resolution 1244, noting the importance of ensuring that the Security Council and the wider international community are kept regularly, fully and promptly informed of developments on the ground, particularly the situation of the Serbian and other non-Albanian communities.

Describing UNMIK as a key instrument in maintaining stability in Kosovo and Metohija, Đurić stated that Serbia highly values the Mission’s role and importance and expects it to remain actively engaged in accordance with the mandate established by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244. He particularly underscored the importance of the consistent and comprehensive implementation of the Resolution, which provides the basis for the United Nations international presence in Kosovo and Metohija.

The Serbian Foreign Minister briefed his interlocutor on the latest actions and decisions by the authorities in Pristina, stressing that Serbia is following developments on the ground with serious concern. Referring to what he described as the latest politically motivated arrests of Serbs, Đurić stated that, since the beginning of the dialogue, Pristina has demonstrated a lack of constructiveness and an unwillingness to take the other side’s views into account, while tensions and incidents continue to arise, further jeopardising the security of the population.

Addressing the situation of the Serbian community and other non-majority communities, Minister Đurić reiterated Serbia’s expectation that the international community take all necessary steps to ensure their full security and respect for their fundamental rights. In this context, he expressed the expectation that, in addition to effectively implementing its mandate, UNMIK would provide an objective and fact-based account of the situation of the Serbian and other non-majority communities in Kosovo and Metohija in the forthcoming report of the United Nations Secretary-General.

Minister Đurić reaffirmed that Serbia will continue its constructive cooperation with UNMIK and all relevant international actors with a view to preserving peace, security and stability in Kosovo and Metohija.
